Starting as a job-seeking platform more than 20 years ago, LinkedIn now has over 1 billion users (22% from the U.S.) and has evolved significantly. In my opinion, it is one of the top 3 social media platforms for SMBs focusing on organic reach strategies.
But, Do LinkedIn Ads Work?
The short answer is yes. LinkedIn ads work as they allow you to reach professional users primed for business-related content. They're particularly effective for generating leads, startup funding, and building brand awareness among decision-makers.
And if you wonder why, here are some recent LinkedIn demographics stats from Social Pilot:
- 65 Million CEOs or Business Owners
- 10 Million C-Level Executives
- 54% U.S. Users Earning $100K+ Annually
My team and I at Ernst Media have achieved great results for some small businesses relying on our Social Media Services. However, LinkedIn advertising may not be the best marketing strategy for your biz.
At the end of this article, you should be able to decide if LinkedIn ads are worth it.
What Makes LinkedIn Advertising Campaigns Effective?
I won't waste your time with general info. The point is to show you how LinkedIn ads differentiate from the options on other social media platforms. For me, it all comes down to the unique ability to zero in on your ideal audience and generate high-quality leads.

The Specific Ways to Reach Your Target Audience
If you've been promoting your small business on Google or any social media platform, I gotta tell you...LinkedIn's targeting options are something else.
You can target folks based on their job title, company size, industry, and even specific skills. As one of my colleagues once said during a video call with a client:
"LinkedIn advertising buys you a ticket for the world's biggest professional networking event"
For example, let's say you're selling new Medical billing software.
You can target hospitals and healthcare providers. The last time we ran a LinkedIn ad campaign for a client in this industry, there were over 35 million members you could target.
Of course, you'll have to narrow it down to specific roles and number of employees. And if you've done your homework...you can even go after particular hospitals/companies.
Another thing I've noticed lately is that LinkedIn's algorithm is getting pretty smart about showing ads to people who are likely to engage with them.
Despite the discontinuation of Lookalike Audiences in Q1 of 2026, we're still able to get a very reasonable ROI for Ernst Media clients using the Predictive Audiences feature.
The Recently Introduced Types of LinkedIn Ads
While fellow digital marketers used to dislike LinkedIn back in the day due to the fewer advertising options, things have changed.
The social media platform has been introducing new types of ads pretty much every year, including several highly effective ad formats in 2026.
You can dive into the specs of each format on the LinkedIn Marketing Solutions page. For the sake of this post, I'll just list the 14 ad types available at the time of writing:
- Single Image Ads
- Video Ads
- Carousel Ads
- Event Ads
- Document Ads
- Thought Leader Ads
- Click to Message Ads
- Connected TV Ads
- Conversation Ads
- Message Ads
- Lead Gen Forms
- Text Ads
- Spotlight Ads
- Follower Ads
The Opportunity for High-Quality Lead Generation
The platform's professional nature suggests that most users are in a business mindset when browsing. I believe that's the main reason LinkedIn ads tend to generate high-quality leads.
And to further assist you with that task, LinkedIn offers lead-generation forms for message ads and sponsored posts. They're pre-filled with user profile data, making it super easy for people to submit their info.
Less friction means more conversions and a fast track to your key social media goals.
Okay, so what do more conversions mean in numbers, you may ask? Years ago, the platform claimed that a LinkedIn ads campaign with a lead gen form could get you conversion rates as high as 13%.
With well-optimized ads and proper targeting, we have even exceeded this number for certain industries. But even if you get a 7-8%, it's still way better than the average 3-5% conversion rate for most landing pages.
Another effective tool for lead generation is Event Ads.
This ad format allows you to promote a webinar or any other live event from your LinkedIn page and get more attendance. It won't just help you generate leads but also strengthen your authority in front of people from the industry...most of these folks must be your target audience, right?
I think you get the point...LinkedIn advertising is great for generating leads that mean business.
What Are the Disadvantages of Linkedin Ads?
I won't be objective if I don't point out the drawbacks of what LinkedIn advertising offers. Most small business owners I've spoken to face two main challenges; the higher cost and the limited analytics.

The Cost of LinkedIn Ad Campaigns
I won't lie to you...LinkedIn ads cost ain't cheap.
It doesn't matter if we're talking about the cost-per-click (CPC) model to drive users to your website or cost-per-send for direct messages to your prospects...if you're a small B2C business with more affordable offerings, LinkedIn ads may not be as cost-effective as Google advertising.
The cost-per-impression (CPM) is a bit cheaper, but it only works for brand awareness.
Even if you can afford to pay a few bucks per click or $0.50 per message on average, you must know how to get the most out of your budget.
What I'm saying is that...if you're flying solo or working with a lean team, you may find yourself spending more time (and money) than you bargained for.
The Limitations of Ad Reporting
And here's the other kicker - LinkedIn's ad reporting tools aren't exactly great.
The basic dashboard and various restrictions related to demographics data can make you feel like you're throwing darts blindfolded. Some folks also report major discrepancies when using third-party social media reporting tools due to privacy policies.
Thus, if you don't know how to crunch those numbers, your ad spend spiral can go out of control.
The Bottom Line: Are LinkedIn Ads Worth It?
So, if you own a small e-commerce or service-based business that doesn't generate much revenue, the cost of LinkedIn ads will be a tough pill to swallow. If you run a local business, the lack of geographic targeting will be a challenge.
In any of these cases, you may want to explore Facebook ads or advertising on YouTube to scale your small business on social media.
Now, if you offer high-ticket B2B solutions or you're the founder of a startup in the tech, finance, healthcare, and consulting sectors, then LinkedIn ads are worth it by all means. Just be aware that getting the best outcomes takes time, skill, and a lot of testing.
I know these are more general answers, but that's as much as I can cover in a single article.
