According to Business Dasher, over 80% of people researched online before purchasing, and 60% of SMBs utilized online advertising channels to reach their target audience in 2026.

I believe you'd agree that these stats paint a very clear picture...the importance of digital marketing has drastically increased, and that's due to these 3 reasons.

In this article, I'll narrow the focus to paid digital marketing.

We'll discuss the 3 most effective channels to advertise and grow your small business in 2026.

You'll see insights from my Spokane-based boutique marketing agency and key statistics from authority sources in the industry.

Hi, my name is Evan Ernst, and before we dive in, I'd like to answer one question.

What Are Paid Digital Marketing Channels?

Paid digital marketing channels allow businesses to advertise to specific groups of people. There are various pricing models, such as cost per click, impression, lead, etc. The goal is to reach targeted audiences quickly and effectively using paid media instead of relying only on owned media like newsletters, blogs, and video content.

Paid digital channels include advertising on search engines and social media, as well as sponsored content. The most popular example is Google Ads. The platform offers multiple ways to promote your business, such as text, display, local and video ads.

Now, let's get into the top 3 paid channels for advertising your small business online.

Paid search marketing is the digital channel companies of all sizes use to advertise on search engine result pages and increase website visitors. It is one of the most effective paid ads for lead generation and customer acquisition.

According to Higher Visibility:

"Around 28% of marketers used paid search, and nearly 20% of business owners say it was their most profitable channel in 2026"

Most of the work we do for small businesses at Ernst Media is also related to paid search, particularly Google Ads management. Using mainly text search and shopping ads, we've continuously achieved the highest ROI for our clients. Something that can be seen in our testimonials.

Both formats are pay-per-click based (PPC Advertising). I'll give you a brief overview of each.

But before I do that...

Here is a visual of the most important metrics, as shown in WordStream's latest search advertising benchmark report.

Text Search Ads

These are the most common paid search ads and can be used to achieve the marketing goals of both B2C and B2B companies. They appear at the top or bottom of search engine results pages and consist of a headline, a display URL, and a short description.

Text ads effectively capture the attention of your target audience with concise, relevant messaging...when you have the Ad Rank needed to get your ad placed above organic search results.

To further optimize campaigns, we implement images alongside text to increase click-through rates for accounts older than 60 days. When competitors' ads contain text only, we often get CTRs way above the average of 6-7% because image assets make the ad pop.

Shopping Ads

Shopping ads showcase products directly in search results with images, prices, and merchant information. These Google ads are particularly beneficial for eCommerce PPC, as retailers can display their inventory in front of searchers, demonstrating strong buyer intent.

The recent size increase led to a further improvement in click-through rates. With well-structured Shopping campaigns, we've significantly lowered the cost per click for many small businesses relying on our affordable PPC management services.

On the other hand, American retailers spend about 76% of their paid search budgets on Shopping ads. Thus, I see a good opportunity for small business owners to swim against the tide. What I mean is focusing on well-crafted and optimized text search ads instead.

Social Media Advertising

All major social media platforms are effective paid digital marketing channels for small businesses to reach their target audiences. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, YouTube, and even forums like Reddit offer diversified methods for advertising.

According to DataReportal:

"The USA was home to 239M social media users at the beginning of 2026, equating to 70% of the total population"

Platforms differentiate not just with their user base but with their targeting options. These can be leveraged to achieve pretty much any marketing objective you could think of.

I'll focus on Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Based on my experience, these are the best social media platforms for small businesses.

Facebook Ads

With over 3 billion monthly active users in 2026, Facebook is still a digital marketer's (myself included) favorite social media platform. The diverse audience and continuously evolving targeting options enable us to generate quality leads for any small business.

In their Q3 of 2026 report, Meta stated that the average price per ad increased by 11% year-over-year. However, they also claimed a 7% increase in ad impressions, which, in my opinion, makes up for the bump in advertising costs.

Based on that and the results we deliver for Ernst Media clients, Facebook ads are worth it.

And if that's not convincing enough to focus more of your marketing efforts on Facebook, here are a few more eye-opening stats from Hootsuite:

  • Facebook is the 3rd most visited website in the world
  • It's expected to reach 75% of the population by 2026
  • Users spend almost 20 hours a month on Facebook

YouTube Ads

YouTube is a very efficient paid digital marketing channel for small businesses looking to engage with niche audiences. It's not only the second-largest search engine, with nearly 2.5 billion logged-in users, but also the news source for more than 1/3 of Americans.

YouTube offers various ad formats that can be precisely targeted based on different criteria. It's a valuable platform for reaching your potential customers. We've successfully leveraged its features even in digital marketing strategies for Nonprofits.

And let me share one YouTube statistic that will surprise most folks. You'd assume that Gen Z spends their time on apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, right?

Well...not exactly the case. A recently published report by eMarketer shows that:

Over 89% of Gen Z are on YouTube...compared to a low 70% for all the social media platforms I mentioned above.

So, if you're a clothing retailer, tech startup founder, gaming company owner, etc., and think YouTube is not a good place to run an advertising campaign...perhaps you should reconsider.

Check out my article on the advantages of YouTube advertising for small businesses.

LinkedIn Ads

LinkedIn, on the other hand, is not the place to reach a Gen Z audience. It's the social platform of professionals where business-related content works best.

So, do LinkedIn ads work for small businesses? Yes, you can read more about it in this article.

Generally speaking, if your targeted audience is CEOs, executives, and high-income earners...then LinkedIn may be one of the most effective paid digital marketing channels.

It allows you to generate leads that mean business!

However, the average cost of LinkedIn ads is significantly higher than any other platform. I'm talking about 5x higher in some cases. In other words, I wouldn't recommend it to most B2C companies.

Not saying it's not worth trying...If you're creative, know your target audience very well, and have experience with digital marketing campaigns, then you may succeed.

As Shaun of the B2B House says in his deep dive article on LinkedIn Ad Costs:

"Linkedin rewards advertisers for meeting their member’s needs with lower ad costs"

You're probably curious whether organic social media marketing is still effective.

We manage to increase brand awareness organically for clients using our small business social media services, but the optimal strategy is combining organic and paid social.

As seen in the chart posted by Neil Patel, most companies (58%) are reducing their organic social marketing budgets for 2026. I'm pretty sure they're reallocating to paid ads.

Influencer Marketing

Influencers have also emerged as an effective marketing channel for small businesses looking to build trust and authenticity around their brand.

Of course, I don't mean partnering with Kim Kardashian, but rather working with the so-called micro and nano influencers.

First, because these are much more affordable, and second because follower counts don't matter as much anymore. It's not about the eyeballs.

As you can see in the Influencer Marketing Hub chart below, most businesses preferred to work with the smallest influencers in 2026.

The thing is, your ROI is based on the connection an influencer has with their audience. In digital marketing terms means engagement rate (ER).

Speaking of engagement rates, working with influencers who have between 5,000 and 25,000 followers, we've been getting 15% ER on average.

A recent example is a fitness app we worked with.

They saw a 27% increase in downloads after partnering with a certified online trainer who shared their workout routines and progress with his 3,500 Instagram followers.

The Bottom Line

As I've discussed in previous articles, focusing on search engine optimization (SEO) and building an email list will have a major impact on your small business. However, these strategies take more time to build momentum and deliver results.

If you're eager to see immediate outcomes, paid digital marketing channels are the way to go.

Whether you pick search engines, social platforms, or influencers...paid media allows you to make data-driven marketing decisions and get quick wins in terms of website traffic, lead generation, and sales.

My team and I at Ernst Media can help you choose the best approach...and not only!

You can count on us to assist your in-house team or craft and execute a winning strategy independently. Let's discuss your business goals and how we can help.
