Social media platforms have always played an important role in a digital marketing strategy. The benefits have been discussed countless times over the years.

Yet, most SMBs don't drive revenue from social media.

Small business owners can no longer afford to ignore the importance of social media marketing. The trends we'll discuss present a big opportunity for growth.

And not paying attention to those...Could leave your business in the dust.

My name is Evan, and I'm the founder of Ernst Media. In this article, you'll learn how a social media presence can put you ahead of the competition in 2026 and beyond.

The trends we'll discuss are closely related to changes in consumer behavior. My team and I have been following it for nearly two decades...And this has been the key to delivering great results when helping small businesses with social media marketing.

Consumers Are Using Social Media as a Search Engine

This shift started gaining traction around 2026 and has only strengthened since then. I don't want you to think this is based on an assumption of mine...Here is some data to back it up.

Check out this infographic from a study performed by TINT in 2026.

infographic showing the percentage of people in different deographics that use social media for search

The numbers show that over 75% of people use social media channels...To find products, services, and businesses that fit their needs.

So yeah, it's no longer about posting pretty pictures and funny memes.

Let me give you some additional insights before you go ALL IN on social media. The data doesn't mean SEO is dead or any social platform can grow your business.

You should use it in line with your target audience demographics.

Gen Z and millennials use TikTok and Instagram as search engines. However, Baby Boomers still rely on Google to answer their queries, and when they go social...Facebook is the place to find them.

The undisputed winner is YouTube, with about half the US population using it as a search engine. That's why it's number one on my Best Social Media for Small Business list.

So, what does this mean for your social media marketing strategy?

It means that you need to optimize your social media for search. In other words, when people need your products or services, they should find YOU...NOT your competitors.

Here are some things we've been doing for our clients at Ernst Media:

  • We add relevant keywords and hashtags in posts
  • We create content that answers common questions
  • We encourage their satisfied customers to leave reviews

And there is another benefit... Social activity isn't a direct Google ranking factor, whatever you've read. But it feeds the things that are: people find your pages, share them, link to them, and start searching for your name.

In other words...SEO and social media work together for your small business. More on exactly how, further down.

User-Generated Content Becomes Very Powerful

Let's talk about another trend that contributes to the rising importance of social media marketing...User-generated content (UGC). Trust me, it's not just a buzzword:

an imge with quote emphasizing that user generted content is a powerful tool for small businesses

It's a powerful tool that can take small businesses to the next level by increasing brand recognition. My Proven Social Media Tips post includes interesting stats and ideas on collecting UGC.

But what exactly is UGC?

It's any social media content (posts, reviews, photos, etc.) created by your customers, not you. It has become a potent asset for SMBs looking to connect with their audience in a more genuine way.

UGC is so powerful because:

It's authentic » Your customers tell their stories about your product or service.

It builds trust » Potential customers see real people using and loving your offerings.

It's cost-effective » You're getting content without having to create it yourself.

And it's not only going to help you build brand awareness. We've been implementing UGC in social media ads, resulting in significant changes in conversion rates...One of the most important digital marketing KPIs for small businesses.

But here's the kicker...UGC can also enhance your SEO strategy.

For example, we've been diving into social media platforms like Reddit to discover fresh long-tail keywords. We then use those when creating educational blog content for our clients.

Personalized Engagement Brings More Sales

Alright, here is the last social media trend that can contribute to achieving key small business goals. Engaging personally with your followers has always been effective for building brand loyalty.

But things have changed, and its role in your social media strategy is huge!

Let me paint the picture with some key stats from Persuasion Nation:

  • 71% of customers expect businesses to provide personalized experiences
  • 75% of consumers are likelier to buy from a retailer recognizing them by name
  • Companies that use personalization see an ROI of $20 for every $1 invested

The numbers show that to boost sales, you need to talk to your customers directly, not shout into the void...Now, let me tell you where small businesses like yours have a real edge.

I assume your social media accounts are managed by you, your employees, or a boutique marketing agency that works closely with your in-house team.

This gives you a huge advantage when it comes to authentic, personalized interactions.

a visualization of how personal engagement can impact small business social media efforts

Think about it...You've chatted with your customers, answered their calls, or exchanged emails. This firsthand knowledge allows you to:

  • Respond to comments with genuine insight
  • Address customer concerns with real answers
  • Tailor offerings based on objective feedback

Big companies, with their layers of corporate structure, can't achieve this. Neither can SMBs that outsource digital marketing and aren't careful about who they hand their brand to.

Whether you'll be the one doing it or have a reliable marketing partner...Personalized engagement is the best way to build a relationship with your customer base.

And that's how you'll set your small business apart in a crowded market.

I hope you now understand why ignoring the importance of social media marketing is no longer an option. To wrap it up, I'll emphasize how focusing on each trend can impact your business growth.

And if you need fresh social media content ideas...These five can make a big impact.

By recognizing and adapting to this trend, your small business can gain a significant advantage in discoverability and engagement. With well-optimized social media profiles and posts, you create a searchable catalog of your products or services.

Similar to the benefits of SEO, when your social media content answers queries and provides value, it gets better reach. You become an authority in your niche, which will increase brand awareness and impact sales.

At Ernst Media, we also see this as an opportunity to showcase each small business's unique brand identity in a way that search engines can't match.

Using UGC

Encouraging UGC provides free content. But when showcasing it effectively, your customers become brand ambassadors.

And that means word-of-mouth marketing, which is extremely valuable.

As I mentioned, we've been implementing UGC (mainly in Facebook ads for small businesses) to improve conversions. It has been working great because UGC serves as social proof...It motivates buyers.

Like Josh Hager said:

"95% of people trust recommendations from others over branded content, even if they don't know them personally"

Furthermore, analyzing the content created by your audience will help you understand...How they use your products or what they value most about your services.

Personalized Interactions

I'm bombarded with generic marketing messages every single day. I'm sure you can relate, and so can your target audience.

Add a personal touch to your social media interactions, and your small business will stand out.

You'll also open up opportunities for upselling and cross-selling. When you understand a customer's preferences and purchase history...You can make relevant product recommendations or offer personalized deals.

Our analysis shows that this not only increases sales but also enhances the customer's experience with the brand...More long-term benefits for your business.

How SEO and Social Media Work Together

In the free consultations I do every week, small business owners still ask me which one to pick...Search engine optimization or social media.

It's the wrong question. The two feed each other, and here is where that happens.

When someone searches your business name, your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram profiles show up on page one next to your website.

ernst media social media profiles showing up in google search results

That's more of the first page under your control...And more ways for an interested buyer to move to the next stage of your digital marketing funnel.

It's also why we write each client's bio and about sections around the keywords they want to be known for, and point the profile links at the right page rather than the home page every time.

Most SEO advice says to publish link-bait posts and wait for backlinks. That works if you already have authority. If your site has a low domain rating, you usually won't reach page 1...And nobody links to what they can't find.

Social distribution fixes the finding part. Put educational content in front of bloggers and journalists on the platforms they actually read, and some of them link back on their own.

My twin brother Nick and I built the backlink profile of our hobby site, Classic Nation, that way. We shared articles on our own channels. We never pitched anyone.

Links are a ranking factor. Social posts are not. Turning the second into the first is the honest version of "social media helps SEO."

Your Comments Section Is Free Keyword Research

Post something genuinely useful and the comments fill up with the exact phrasing your customers use. How do I do this at home? What tools do you need? How long does it take?

Those are real queries, and they beat what a keyword tool hands you. We use them the same way we use Reddit threads...As the starting list for a startup SEO strategy, or as a reason to go back and update an article we published two years ago.

SEO Tactics That Belong in Your Social Posts

Now the other direction. Some of what you'd do for a web page works just as well on a social platform:

  • YouTube: find the keywords searchers use on both YouTube and Google, then build the title and description around them. Add closed captions.
  • LinkedIn: treat the first 100 characters of an article like a meta description.
  • Pinterest: write pin descriptions with long-tail keywords, not slogans.
  • Both: keyword-based titles, alt text on every image, and relevant hashtags. Hashtags are searchable too.

Local businesses have one more thing to do. Geo-tag posts on Instagram and Facebook, and name neighborhoods and landmarks instead of the city alone. For a dental office on the South Hill in Spokane, that meant posts like "Get your smile ready for summer fun at Manito Park" and hashtags like #SpokaneSmiles.

One last item: keep the person whose name is on your content consistent across your site and their profiles. My author bio links to our about page, and each of my accounts lists me as the founder of Ernst Media. If freelance writers produce your posts, ask them to name your company and link to it in their profiles, and to share each piece when it goes live.
